New students starting university need to be aware they could be targets of a fresh wave of tax scams, warns HMRC.
The revenue has written to all UK universities advising them to warn new students to keep their money and personal details away from the fraudsters.
Over 620,000 tax-related email scams were reported to HMRC last year – up 20,000 on the previous year.
Fraudsters use a range of methods, including sending fake tax refunds using seemingly legitimate university email addresses (often ending .ac.uk) in order to avoid detection.
If you receive an email offering money sent to them by someone claiming to be HMRC and it seems too good to be true, then you should report it to phising@hmrc.gove.uk
