Outdated routers are putting millions of people at risk from the hackers, claims a new Which? Investigation.
Which? sent a selection of the most commonly used old devices to security specialists, Red Maple Technologies, to find out just how secure they are, and discovered issues with more than half, from ISPS such as Virgin, Sky, TalkTalk, EE and Vodaphone.
This could potentially affect up to 7.5 million Brits.
The main issues were weak default passwords, local network vulnerabilities, and a lack of updates.
The routers on test weren’t all bad, though, said Which?. For old devices from BT and Plusnet which had been recently updated I didn’t find any unfixed vulnerabilities or weak default passwords.
