The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has written to 17 well-known fashion brands to tell them they need to review their business practices.
The letters highlight area of concern over their green claims, such as the use of broad or general terms, and whether certain products are being wrongly included in the ‘eco’ ranges.
The businesses have also been reminded that CMA can now fine them up to 10% of their worldwide turnover if they break consumer law, meaning their green claims must be accurate and not misleading to shoppers.
CMA has issued a new compliance guide, after securing commitments from ASOIS, Boohoo and George at Asda that they will only use accurate and clear green claims moving forward.
Interestingly CMA has not named the 17brands it wrote to.
