Membership of the main UK accountancy bodies continues to grow, according to the twenty-first edition of Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession.
The seven bodies have nearly 400,000 members in the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI), and over 600,000 members worldwide. The growth in membership between 2021 and 2022 was 2.1% in the UK and ROI and by 2.4% worldwide.
However, after increasing slightly in 2021, the decline in student numbers that we saw in 2020 in the UK and ROI returned for 2022. Between 2021 and 2022 student numbers in the UK and ROI decreased by 3.5% and by 2% worldwide, compared to growth of 0.3% and 1.6% respectively in the previous year.
That still means there are over 155,000 students in the UK and ROI studying a professional qualification, and over 585,000 worldwide.
